HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET MY TEETH CLEANED?

In general, it is recommended that people with healthy teeth and gums have a dental cleaning at our Winter Park dental office one to two times per year (every 6 to 12 months). People at higher risk for gum disease, such as those with diabetes, smokers, and those with a family history of gum disease, should have a dental cleaning at least twice per year. If you are prone to cavities or have been diagnosed with gum disease, you should have a cleaning three to four times per year.

Regular dental cleanings are essential for the health of your teeth and gums. Over time, the teeth accumulate a layer of tartar, which is basically a layer of calcified bacteria. Overgrowth of tartar contributes to gum disease and cavities.

Having your teeth cleaned removes the tartar, decreasing the chance of developing these problems, as well as allowing for early identification and treatment. Tiny cavities are much easier to treat than large ones, which may require root canals. Likewise, early gum disease can be reversed with frequent cleanings, whereas advanced gum disease may require surgery.

Dental cleanings are an easy, essential preventive treatment that greatly increases your odds of maintaining optimal oral health. Please contact our Winter Park dental office, and we will be happy to arrange an appointment for you with our dental hygienist.
