Fillings

Fillings are one of the most common treatments used in dentistry. When your tooth has been compromised due to decay or trauma, restorative materials are used to repair and strengthen the tooth and prevent further damage. No matter what your level of dental care, almost everyone has had a tooth filled at one time or another.

Fillings – An Essential Part of Dental Treatment

Dental fillings are important to protect your teeth and maintain overall oral health. If your tooth develops decay, the decay must be removed to save the tooth from further damage and prevent possible infection of the root canal. In order to determine the extent of decay, our Maitland family dentist office uses digital x-rays, which are not only faster but also safer for you and the environment.

There are different materials available to repair teeth and fill cavities, and we use both composite and amalgam fillings. Both have specific uses, and Dr. Matar will recommend the best type depending on your individual needs.

Composite Fillings

Composite fillings are made using a material that closely resembles your natural tooth color and are designed to blend beautifully with your smile. Since composite fillings are so natural-looking, they are often used in areas of the mouth that are most visible, like front teeth, because they can be custom-matched to the exact shade of your natural teeth. Another benefit of using composite fillings is that less tooth material has to be removed, which helps preserve the strength of the tooth.

Composite fillings are very durable and can also be used to:

  • Restore the appearance of chipped teeth
  • Alter the shape of irregular teeth
  • Close small gaps between teeth
  • Repair cracked or broken teeth

Amalgam Fillings

Amalgam fillings are often referred to as “silver” because of their color, but amalgam is actually a combination of different metals. This creates a very durable material that it is commonly used in teeth that must withstand a lot of stress, like molars. For this reason it is also used in teeth where a significant area of the tooth needs to be filled to give it added strength.

Technology Adds to Your Comfort

Your comfort during any dental treatment is very important to us. Our Maitland dentist office uses state-of-the-art technology and materials to increase your level of comfort during fillings and other procedures:

The Wand – A handheld device that greatly minimizes the discomfort associated with injections by delivering anesthetic very slowly using a computer-generated system.

Ultra Strong Numbing Gel – A powerful numbing gel that consists of three different anesthetics to increase the effectiveness of numbing prior to injection.

Whisper-Quiet Drills – State-of-the-art drills eliminate the “screaming” sound of traditional high-speed drills, helping to reduce patient anxiety.
